According to the report of the General Department of Fisheries, the sea catch output in March 2017 reached 248 thousand tons (increase by 2.2% over the same period of 2016), bringing the total sea catch output from the beginning of 2017 reached 746 thousand tons .
For the aquaculture sector, although in the first months of 2017 the weather is relatively more favorable than in 2016, people are still breeding shrimp with a modest area. Total shrimp farming area from the beginning of the year reached 518,741 hectares, of which majority the area is for extensive black tiger shrimp farming and extensive improvement farming, reaching 502,593 hectares. White shrimp farming area reached 16,148 hectares.
Until March 17, 2012, Pangasius farming area reached 2,025 hectares, down 7.1% over the same period, however, the output of tra fish reached 191,021 tons, up 6.8% over the same period. In the first few months of the year, the price of pangasius tends to increase, to average 25,500 VND now, which is a positive signal for Pangasius farmers.
Aquaculture production in March 2017 reached 202.6 thousand tons (up 2% over the same period), bringing the total aquaculture output in the first 3 months to 567 thousand tons. Fishery export turnover in the first three months of the year is estimated at $ 1.453 billion, approximately equal to the same period in 2016.
At the March briefing and mission deployment in April, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam said “The production situation in March and the first 3 months of 2017 has seen positive changes. The weather is very favorable for aquaculture as well as fishing, prices are relatively stable. Especially, the current price of pangasius is high which is very beneficial for farmers. However, in order to achieve the targets for 2017, the Vice Minister has directed a number of core missions in April and the following months. In particular, the aquaculture sector should focus on developing brackish water shrimp, promote brackish water shrimp farming on the remaining area. Moreover, we should strengthen quality control, breeds, input materials, disease control to have promptly, accurate information orientation for farmers and export markets. The Department of Aquaculture in cooperation with the National Center for Agricultural Extension organized a conference on shrimp seed quality management. Coordinate with the Department of Animal Health to control disease outbreaks and review lobster farming in the central provinces. The Aquaculture Department monitors the management of transplanting and receiving pangasius broodstock in the localities. Next the national catfish product project should be continued to study. And crispy pangasius products also should be research in order to produce. In addition, production supervision should be intensified for other fisheries.
In the field of exploitation, the Vice Minister requested that the restoration work be completed in four provinces namely Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue and implementing of ecosystem restoration projects in these four provinces. The Department of Capture Fisheries was assigned to hold a meeting to summarize the North Fisheries and to direct the production of South Fisheries in 2017. A conference should be organize to review and amend the Decree 67. Price scheme should be revised to develop direction for the exploitation of the ocean. The propaganda for fishermen also should be executed to reduce the situation of illegal and illegal fishing.
