(seafood.vasep.com.vn) As of Nov 2016, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to ASEAN valued at US$123.3 million, accounting for 8% of total pangasius exports, and increasing by 0.4% year on year. Of that, exports to top 3 largest importers in the region including Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines rose by 0.1 – 3.5% compared to the same period in 2015. In Nov 2016, exports to Singapore climbed up nearly 43% over the same period last year.
Thailand stayed as the largest buyer of Vietnam’s pangasius in ASEAN, making up 2.8%, equal to the export value of the Netherlands (the largest importer in EU). Therefore, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to Southeast Asia, including Thailand are increasingly growing.
According to the ITC, in the first 10 months of this year, imports of whitefish products, including Vietnam’s pangasius into Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines recorded good growth. The average import value into Thailand ranged from US$3.45 to 8.3 million per month, while that into Singapore was about US$2.3-5.5 million per month.
Viet Nam claimed as the main supplier of pangasius to Thailand. In recent years, imports of some seafood items from Viet Nam into Thailand such as shrimp, squid, octopus, tuna, as well as pangasius remained stable.
Besides pangasius from Viet Nam, Thailand also imported some whitefish products from the US, Russia and Norway for processing and re-exporting such as frozen Alaska pollock, frozen cod.
Through the end of 2016, total export value of Vietnam’s pangasius to ASEAN forecasted to rise by 5% over the previous year.
